Self-consistency and universality of camera distortion models

چکیده
This paper introduces the concepts of “selfconsistency” and “universality” to evaluate high precision camera distortion models. Self-consistency is evaluated by the residual error when the distortion generated with a certain model is corrected by the best parameters for the same model (used in reverse way, which is common practice). Analogously, universality is measured by the residual error when a model is used to correct distortions generated by a family of other models. Five classic camera distortion models are reviewed and compared for their degree of self-consistency and universality. Among the evaluated models, it is concluded that only the polynomial and the rational models are universal up to precisions of 1/100 pixel. However, the polynomial model, being linear, is much simpler and faster to estimate. Unusually high polynomial degrees are required to reach this strong precision. Nevertheless, extensive numerical experiments show that such distortion polynomials are easily estimated and produce a precise distortion correction without over-fitting. Our conclusions are validated by three independent experimental setups: The models are compared first in synthetic experiments by their approximation power; second by fitting a real camera distortion estimated by a non parametric algorithm; and finally by the absolute correction measurement provided by photographs of tightly stretched strings, warranting a high straightness.

متن کاملNew approach for calibration of pixelated scintillation detectors of intraoperative gamma cameras
Introduction:SURGEOSIGHT is a dedicated intra-operative hand-held gamma camera designed and manufactured by our team to be used for lymphoscintigraphy. Although conventional gamma cameras are widely used, they lack the capability of the sentinel lymph node (SLN) imaging in the operation room. Like conventional gamma cameras it is necessary to calibrate SURGEOSIGHT for linearity...
متن کاملNonparametric Correction of Distortion 1 Nonparametric Correction of Distortion 1
Previous work on camera calibration, and particularly work on self-calibration, has assumed that the camera is well modeled by an ideal, relatively simple, parametric model. Real camera systems, however, diverge signiicantly from a simple pinhole perspective imaging model. Therefore, parametric calibration models are typically extended to include parameters which model distortions from perspect...
متن کاملThe Universality Spectrum : Consistency for More Classes
We deal with consistency results for the existence of universal models in natural classes of models (more exactly–a somewhat weaker version). We apply a result on quite general family to Tfeq and to the class of triangle-free graphs
متن کاملViolating Rotating Camera Geometry: The Effect of Radial Distortion on Self-Calibration
In this paper we show that radial distortion of images invalidates the geometric constraint on which self-calibration of a rotating camera is based — that 3D lines drawn between matched features all intersect at the rotation centre. We develop a geometric picture showing how radial distortion violates this constraint and discuss the implications for self-calibration of a rotating camera. In par...
